Camels became the preferred mode of transport because they were more gentle in carrying valuables like wine, spirits and ales with fewer breakages than bullock teams. And there are several different kinds of camels – the ‘Mekraua’ for fast riding, the ‘Scinde’ camel, a hill camel and a beast of burden and the ‘Kandahar’ camel which was a very heavy animal for heavy transport.
