NSW Health reported this morning that just 57 new cases of COVID-19 has been confirmed as at 8pm last night since 8pm on Saturday, April 4, which was a decrease of 30 cases recorded in the previous 24-hour period.

However, NSW Health executive director of health protection Dr Jeremy McAnulty said that while that was “pleasing”, he attributed the decrease to fewer tests being carried out as part of the weekend effects.

“Around 2500 tests were done which was a drop on previous days,” Dr McAnulty said.

Dr McAnulty said that a total of 121,401 people had been tested and excluded, and that the number of confirmed cases had reached 2637.

Sadly 18 people in the state have died, making up almost half of the country’s 37 COVID-19 deaths.

Two of those deaths – an 86-year-old man and an 85-year-old man – occurred yesterday.

At a press conference this morning alongside Dr McAnulty,  NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said there was still cause for concern in communities despite the drop in confirmed cases.

“Pleasingly, the number of new cases in NSW is remaining stable or going down and that is good news,” the Premier said.

“But what remains of concern to us in NSW is the number of people who are acquiring the virus through community transmission, community to community transmission.”

The Premier also thanked NSW residents for their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I again want to thank everybody for their patience and for really stepping up and taking on board the restrictions we’ve put in place,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“In the main, people have done the right thing, they are adjusting their lives.

“I want to say a deep thank you to everybody, it’s been about a week now and we know that we are making a difference and we want to keep this up.”

It was also announced this morning that a new NSW Government agency, Resilience NSW, had been created which will drive world-leading disaster preparedness and recovery approach for the NSW community.
