Wednesday, May 5, 1915, was a momentous and proud day for the Narrabri community. The town farewelled 16 volunteers to serve in the First World War.

A civic luncheon was held and later that day the volunteers were seen off by a large crowd at Narrabri railway station.

A report in The Courier, Friday, May 7, 1915, recorded the event.

On September 15, 1930, The Courier published the poem ‘Our Boys’. Narrabri businessman W.M. Malone wrote the poem in tribute to the volunteers.
