“A bunch of flowers can change somebody’s whole day, and brighten it up,” said Blooms on Maitland florist Konnie Wilson, while busily arranging a selection of hot pink asters ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday.

“It doesn’t have to be a big expensive bunch, even a little bunch can put a smile on somebody’s face.”

Konnie’s shop is blooming with colour and smells delightful from the scent of tall stemmed, purple irises to proteas and daisy chrysanthemums.

While coronavirus concerns and restrictions are hitting most businesses hard, Konnie said she is expecting a busier Mother’s Day than previous years.

“It’s probably busier due to the isolation, people can’t go out for lunch, they can’t visit nursing homes and might not be able to visit their Mums due to travel – we’ve had lots of orders.

“At first, I thought I was going to have to close and didn’t order stock initially.

“But people have been ordering flowers – they’re nice to have if you’re working from home or if you can’t go out and celebrate something or if you’re missing family.”

Konnie said she was grateful that community members have been showing support for local businesses and she’ s impressed with the way many businesses had adapted and evolved during COVID-19.
