Narrabri Tennis head coach Shane Murphy welcomed the return of group lessons at the Dangar Park Tennis Centre from Monday.

Groups trained in groups of four – on one court with one coach – or eight – across two separate courts with two coaches.

Murphy told The Courier that although the return of group lessons provided a new challenge he was just happy for the kids to be on-court and enjoying the sport.

Meanwhile there is still no date in sight for Friday junior matchplay or the Wednesday night competition tennis to return yet.

Murphy added that when the current NSW Government restrictions are relaxed, group lessons will be permitted to increase.

Meanwhile Tennis NSW provided its latest COVID-19 update yesterday.

“Since 15 May when we saw some easing of restrictions by the State Government in NSW, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our tennis family in acknowledging and implementing the recommended guidelines. We’re also pleased to hear that the resources provided have been well received and that they are assisting you as you have re-opened or plan to re-open your venues and welcome players back to our sport,” the statement read.

“As you may be aware, further changes are being proposed by the NSW State Government from June 1.

“As always, we appreciate that many of you will have questions surrounding what this means for tennis and any possible further changes to the guidelines. Our team are working through this now, together with the State Government and Office of Sport.

“Our Guidelines are likely to be updated to include the following changes: Clubhouses re-opening, further easing of restrictions to on-court coaching and with the resumption of regional travel, then we would be considering what local and regional tournaments and match play may look like. All of these changes will have to be considered alongside any updates to the Public Health Orders as well.

“In regards to the resumption of TA sanctioned AR tournaments (AMTs, JTs and JDS), until all borders are open and the ranking system can operate freely, there is currently no date for the resumption of these tournaments. We will be communicating shortly on how Tennis NSW intends to provide competitive opportunities for our playing groups in the next week.

“All of our collective actions in the past few weeks have led us to a point whereby we are able to resume our sport far quicker than what many of us envisaged a month or so ago.”
