To hear that our Target Country Store is to close in the new year, came as a shock and disbelief to many.

It has been a mainstay in Maitland Street for as long as I can remember.

To my knowledge it has been well supported by the community.

Its closure will bring a huge gap in shopping experience to the town and wider district. There will be no shop carrying affordable baby or children’s clothing, shoes, underwear plus bedding, linen etc.

Shoppers will have no alternative but to shop on line or drive to Moree, Gunnedah or Tamworth to a Kmart store, where they will no doubt shop in other stores whilst there.

Who can blame them?

I will be one of them.

As for the future of the long term loyal staff, I fear for their job prospects.

Some have spent their entire career working for the same store.

Hopefully together with support from our council and the Chamber of Commerce we can get some answers from Wesfarmers as to why our store has to close instead of being turned into a Kmart store.

A Shire wide petition could help with evidence of support from the community.

We all can do our part, to at least try and help keep a vital business open in our town.
