Each time a new bridge has been built over the Namoi River at Tarriaro the river has risen, usually a good thing, but in these cases delaying the work.

The river rose again during the early stage of current construction of the third Tarriaro bridge, causing some delay, but now the project is nearing finality.

Construction is one step closer to being finished with the final concrete pour on the deck of the new, dual lane bridge completed on Tuesday, May 26.

The concrete deck was poured in two stages with over 100m3 of cement delivered and poured on site.

Mayor Cathy Redding was on site to witness the crane deliver the concrete and was impressed with new structure, “the new bridge is certainly starting to take shape and it won’t be long until it is opened to the public.

“To see the dual lane bridge on this well-travelled road become a reality is wonderful.

“This bridge will dramatically improve the safety and accessibility to locals and visitors to our Shire alike as well as provide vital connectivity to larger vehicles and machinery.”

The contractors will give the concrete time to cure before starting on adding the bridge railings.

After the railings are installed, the contractors will hand the project over to Council which will undertake the final stage of construction of the approaches on either side of the bridge, council said.

This involves sealing of the new road sections, line marking, guard rails, and guide post installation.

Director infrastructure delivery, Darren Raeck is pleased with the progress that has been made.

“The contractors have done extremely well given the impact of storms, river flow and COVID-19.

“An extension of time of 49 days was granted to the contractor due to circumstances beyond their control.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding while this extremely vital piece of infrastructure is being constructed and look forward to the bridge being opened to the public in late June, early July 2020”.

The project has been possible through the NSW Government’s Restart NSW fund, under the Resources for Regions program and a co-contribution from Narrabri Shire Council.
