Namoi Soccer League defending champions Wee Waa United FC will kick off its 2020 campaign on home soil at Cook Oval this Saturday afternoon.

Wee Waa will welcome Moree Services FC to town as the hosts line up for the first time since their 2019 grand final victory back on Saturday, September 21 last year.

Wee Waa’s roster for the coming season is almost identical to that of last year.

The side lost Lukas Kerkhoff, a tall physical defender who leaves a hole in the defence for someone else to step into.

A significant boost for the team is the addition of Ryan O’Neill who is from Wee Waa but played for Narrabri-based Crossroads Elevens FC last season.

O’Neill was a standout in that winless side and was awarded the best midfielder trophy at the club’s awards night late last year.

Wee Waa United will also welcome back former player Greg Avery who said he was keen to lace up the boots again in 2020.

Wee Waa will once again be captained by ever reliable goalkeeper Steve Phelps and will be coached by Shane Soutter who brings a wealth of experience for players both young and old to soak up.

Soutter, a former player, was one of the standouts in the entire competition in recent years before an injury forced him to hang up the boots for now.

The 2020 Namoi Soccer League season will be contested by four teams across 12 weeks ahead of a two-week finals series.

This year the team which finishes ranked first on the ladder at the season’s end will progress straight through to the grand final which it will host.

The second and third ranked teams will contest a qualifying final hosted by the team which finishes second, while the team which places fourth will be eliminated.

Wee Waa will play seven matches at home at Cook Oval and five on the road.

Two of its away games will be contested in Moree and the other three will be played in Narrabri.

One of those Narrabri away games will be played on a Friday night under lights at Hogan Oval against 2019 grand final opponents Narrabri Sporties FC.

Narrabri Sporties FC will take on Narrabri Elevens FC in round one this Saturday at Hogan Oval.
