A decision on the proposed Santos $3.5 billion Narrabri Gas Project in Pilliga forest is just weeks away.

The final determination on the project should be made by the Independent Planning Commission by Friday, September 4.

The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment has concluded the project ‘is in the public interest and approvable subject to strict conditions.’

“The project would not adversely affect the region’s valuable groundwater resources. The project can be designed to avoid or minimise impacts. Consequently, the project is unlikely to result in any significant impacts on the local community or the environment” the Department’s assessment found.

“It would deliver significant economic benefits for NSW and the local community, including $3.5 billion of capital investment to the region, create 1,300 jobs during construction, 200 jobs during operations and contribute $120 million to a community Benefit Fund.”

Several major businesses have indicated they could establish operations in Narrabri if the gas project goes ahead, including a $2 billion fertiliser plant proposed for the Northern NSW Inland Port being developed on the Culgoora Road.

However, opponents of the project – farmers’ groups, environmentalists and community groups, have long argued that the potential for damage to underground water resources and the environment is too great to risk the project.

People wanting to lodge submissions on the Narrabri Gas Project are urged to go to the Commission’s website for information.

Friday, July 10 is the deadline to register as an online speaker at the IPC’s public hearing with speakers able to deliver submissions from a studio at The Crossing Theatre from Monday July 20 to Friday, July 24.
