Namoi Soccer League’s two Narrabri teams were victorious on Saturday in round five of the 2020 Namoi Soccer League season.

Narrabri Sporties FC travelled to Cook Oval to take on Wee Waa and the visitors scored a 3-1 win, while at Hogan Oval the Elevens downed Moree Services FC 3-2 in a come from behind win.

In Wee Waa, Sporties FC opened the scoring inside the first five minutes when striker Blake Jarrett ran onto a long ball from goalkeeper Zaac Brayshaw which cleared the Wee Waa defence. Jarrett slotted a one-on-one shot past Wee Waa keeper Shane Soutter who was filling in for the unavailable Steve Phelps to make the score 1-0.

The home side pushed hard for an equaliser but just after the half hour mark Sporties FC’s leading goal scorer Cooper Brayshaw slotted a curling strike into the bottom right corner after running onto a Matt Hall through ball then through a hole in the Wee Waa defence.

Brayshaw’s ninth of the season made the half-time score 2-0.

Wee Waa netted the first goal of the second half in the 56th minute when David Avery volleyed a shot into the bottom left corner after a free kick from halfway was sent into the box.

Wee Waa was determined to find an equaliser to give itself a chance of victory, but the game’s fourth and final goal was scored by Narrabri’s Jacob Sunderland with about 15 minutes remaining. Sunderland calmly slotted a low, driven Brayshaw corner kick from the right hand side into the bottom right hand corner with a left footed strike.

At Hogan Oval, Moree Services FC scored its two goals inside the opening 15 minutes but the hosts hit back through  Cody Shepherdson and Bailey Campbell to level the score at 2-all at half-time.

Riley Jenkins scored the winner in the 55th minute with a superb long range strike that flew over Moree keeper Will Hawker’s head and into the top left corner.

The weekend was a memorable one for the Narrabri teams given it was the first time they both won in a single round since the Elevens became part of Narrabri FC.

It was also the first time the two sides won on the same day since May 25 last year.

Heading into round five on Saturday, both Wee Waa and the Elevens were on three points but Wee Waa held onto third position on goal difference.

Saturday’s results saw the Elevens rise to third, now three points clear of Wee Waa and just one point behind Moree Services FC.

Sporties FC is now six points clear of second-placed Moree.

Both Narrabri teams can further extend the gap between themselves and the respective teams below them this Saturday.

In round six matches Elevens FC will play at Hogan Oval again when it hosts Wee Waa on Friday night, while Sporties FC will travel to Moree for a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.
