For the first time ever the Narrabri Junior Rugby Club hosted Dangar Park home games for all four of its North West Regional Youth Rugby boys’ and girls’ sides.

The under-14s boys took on Coonabarabran and went down 38-14.

Jack Anderson and Luke Shields both crossed for tries for the Blue Boars and Jonty Fowler slotted two conversions.

The under-16s boys’ game ended as a 24-all draw against the old enemy Moree Bulls.

Bernard O’Connor, Alistair Wheeler, Don Watkins and Zack Mallows all went over for a try each for the Blue Boars, and Sid Harvey and Bernard kicked a conversion each.

The Blue Boars trailed 24-19 late in the contest but a Zack Mallows try on the bell drew the hosts level.

Sid stepped up to attempt the conversion from about 15 metres in from the right sideline and his kick looked goal-bound off the boot.

However, it struck the upright then the crossbar before bouncing away as the match finished all tied up.

The under-14s girls’ team had a night to remember as it won both of its matches.

In the first game the Blue Boars defeated Coonabarabran 15-0 following tries to Holly Ford, Madeleine Shields and Amalie Gosper.

It then demolished the Coona side 39-10 in game two.

Meika Foley and Krista Zarka both bagged doubles in that game and Amalie Gosper, Elizabeth Caton and Zoe Watkins crossed for a try each.

Krista and Holly both kicked a conversion each in the contest.

The two girls’ teams enjoyed playing their first matches of the 2020 campaign at Dangar Park, and girls’ coach Denis Harvey said the two teams’ efforts were outstanding.

“Both teams played the house down,” Harvey said.

“The 14s won both of their games and played really good footy for an inexperienced team.

“After winning both games they were absolutely beside themselves.

“The 16s lost both games against a well-drilled Coona team which had been together for a while.

“But our girls were far more competitive in the second match, it was far closer.

“All the girls after their second games asked us straight away where and who we’d be playing next Friday, they’re all so keen.”

This Friday night the Blue Boars’ teams will travel to Gunnedah where they will play in round two games.

The under-14s boys are scheduled to play at 5.30pm followed by the under-16s boys at 6.30pm.

Both teams play against Calrossy.

The under-14s girls will play two games – one against Tamworth Pirates and the other against Coonabarabran, and the under-16s girls will also play two games, one against Gunnedah and the other against the Tamworth Pirates.
