North West Tennis’ Northern NSW Return to Tennis Champions of Champions event scheduled for this weekend in Inverell has been cancelled following new information passed on by the NSW Government amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was set to conclude the series following qualifying days on Sunday, June 28 (Inverell), July 19 (Narrabri), August 2 (Armidale) and August 9 (Tamworth).
Upon completion of the qualifying events, eight Narrabri Tennis athletes qualified through to the Northern NSW Champion of Champions event
Those were Lincoln Cecil and Charlie Johnstone in under-8 boys, Billy Johnstone in under-10 boys, George Bennett and Callum Wales in under-14 boys, Sophie Hartnett in under-10 girls, Ava Garbutt in under-12 girls and Lily Campbell in under-14 girls.
Lucas Dowdell (under-8 boys) and Jack Hartnett (under-12 boys) were listed as reserves.
North West Tennis made the announcement on Tuesday.
“Sorry to inform you all but we have been notified this morning (Tuesday) by the NSW Government that there will now be a ban on regional travel as of Wednesday, August 19,” the statement said.
“From this statement the Foundation has made the decision to cancel this weekend’s Champion of Champions event at Inverell.
“We apologise for this and we are very saddened by this news but it is vitally important that we follow the rules that the NSW Government has implemented.
“Please note that the North West and North East region will try to reschedule this event for later in the year if possible.”
