David Avery has been crowned the Wee Waa Golf Club’s club champion for a second consecutive year after winning the three-week 2020 event by 30 shots.
26-year-old Avery entered Sunday’s third and final round leading by 19 shots from his father Greg Avery.
Dave, as he is often referred to around the club, got the job done in round three on Sunday with a two over par game to secure the victory.
This year the Wee Waa Golf Club’s annual club championship event was contested across 72 holes.
After the first 27 holes, which were played on Sunday, August 9, Avery led by four shots from 2018 club champion Shannon Bartz.
After 54 holes Avery led with 227, 19 shots ahead of Greg Avery on 246 shots.
Anthony Gray was running third after two rounds and 54 holes with 247 shots and was the nett leader on 214.
In the third and final round on Sunday Avery shot a two over par 74 which saw him finish on 301, 13 over for the 2020 club championships event.
“I’m pretty pleased with how I went, I hit the ball pretty well actually,” Avery said.
“[Round three on Sunday] was pretty tough, it was a windy day, but it probably helped me a bit too.
“I’m pretty happy with the win this year.
“I’ve been enjoying my golf this year and I’ve been playing pretty well, I’m trying to get my first under par game before the end of the year.”
Avery, who won the 2019 event and was gross runner-up in 2017, has gone from strength to strength in recent years and is currently playing off a handicap of two which is his lowest ever.
He will play off one this weekend when he plays in the final eight of the Col Stone Knockout at the Wee Waa Golf Club.
There were 33 golfers who took part in the Wee Waa Golf Club’s 2020 Club Championships.
Fifteen of those competed in A-grade, 10 contested B-grade and the other eight played in C-grade.
Avery’s closest opponents in A-grade were Greg Avery and Anthony Gray who tied for gross runner-up.
