Double bass player Tim Rex has paid tribute to his home town with the iconic Sawn Rocks adorning the cover of his first instrumental album.

The former Narrabri High School student, the son of Chris and Steve Rex, now lives in Melbourne and is studying teaching at Monash University.

Tim titled the recording ‘A Friendly Reminder’ and is joined by friends Tony Gould on piano and Graeme Lyall on saxophone.

He recorded the music at the start of the year with the artwork and production completed during the city’s lockdown.

“I wanted to produce it while I had a chance,” he said.

Reflecting on his time as a student in Narrabri, he said music teachers Steve Bailey and John Fenton sparked his interest in music.

He took up playing the double bass while at university.

“I wanted something with Narrabri involved with it and that came to mind,” he said of using Sawn Rocks on the front cover.

While the current stay-at-home requirement means Tim is unable to perform, he is hoping to start performing once restrictions ease in Melbourne.
