Wednesday next week is scheduled as ‘D-Day’ – decision day for the Narrabri Gas Project.

NSW Independent Planning Commission delayed the date for its decision on the $3.6 billion gas project by almost four weeks to allow time for additional public comment on new material provided by Santos and the state planning department.

The original date for the decision was September 4.

At this stage it is understood the IPC panel will announce its decision on September 30.

The Narrabri Gas Project in Pilliga Forest has been six years in gestation through a rigorous process of investigation and assessments.

The proposed gas development has aroused controversy, with many submissions to the IPC in opposition.

Opponents of the gas project are worried about the potential for irreversible damage to underground water and impacts on farming and the environment.

Supporters argue that the economic and strategic benefits will be significant for Narrabri Shire, the region and NSW with accompanying local jobs and development.
