Former Narrabri boy Shannan Davey relocated to Bundaberg, Queensland, at the start of this year and as luck would have it his new home was just 50 metres away from the local boxing gym.
Davey joined the Attila Boxing Academy and has since been training hard under the eye of coach Attila Kovacs.
Davey aimed to get back in the ring earlier in the year, but the COVID-19 pandemic put that on hold.
On Saturday, he stepped into the ring for the first time since his South East Queensland Titles win in November last year.
In his first fight of the year he went up against Xavier Fletcher from Shape Up Performance Centre, Brisbane.
The pair fought a three, three-minute round match at Eastside Boxing Gym in Brisbane which Davey won by a unanimous points decision.
Davey has previously fought most bouts in the 69kg weight class, but went up to meet Fletcher at 75kg for their match-up.
“It was my first fight at 75kg,” Davey said.
“Stepping up to 75 was different, I could really feel the power difference.
“Xavier was much taller than me and was a big frame, he was good. It was a tough fight. He had a big reach so I had to really use my skills and experience and work my way into it.
“He didn’t really hit me much the whole fight. He landed a few shots but nothing too serious. I was more busy landing bigger shots.
“I was a bit slow in the first round but I thought I’d still won it. Then the second round was my best round, I really picked it up. After that it was smooth sailing.”
The fight night was unlike many others, with a 100-person capacity which allowed for boxers, trainers, coaches and officials only.
There were no crowds on the night and Davey said that suited him just fine.
“It was just like a sparring match really,” Davey said.
“It was good though, I really liked it.”
Davey’s next fight will be against Dylan Biggs, an 18-year-old boxer with 83 fights under his belt who is about to turn professional. Davey and Biggs will go head-to-head at Eastside Boxing Gym on Saturday, October 10.
