Narrabri Sporties duo Cameron Yates and Sam Pryor are the Zone 3 Bowls State Pairs champions for a second consecutive year after defending their 2019 crown at South Tamworth Bowling Club on the weekend.

Yates and Pryor qualified for the eight-team finals series by winning the Wee Waa section’s semi-final and final on Saturday, October 10.

In the quarter-final of the zone championships on Saturday, October 17, the Narrabri pair challenged Inverell’s Darren Hungerford and Adam Ross and scored a 25-8 victory.

That saw them qualify for the semi-final which they played that afternoon against Lightning Ridge’s Adam Webb and Darren Richards. Yates and Pryor stormed into the final with a 25-13 victory in that match.

Joining the Narrabri men in Sunday morning’s final were West Tamworth’s Neville White and Nick Golledge who won their quarter-final and semi-final matches 24-19 and 23-9 respectively.

They were no match for the Narrabri Sporties duo which scored a 26-13 win in the final.

Yates and Pryor’s final win saw them qualify for the State Playoffs which will be contested in either February or March next year.

Meanwhile, two Wee Waa Bowling Club teams were in action in the other two Zone 3 Pairs competitions played in South Tamworth on Saturday.

Wee Waa’s Steve Berger and Ray Dixon won their Senior Singles quarter-final, but were eliminated by eventual champions John Smith and John Vella from West Tamworth.

Wee Waa’s Zack and Hunter Doring also won their quarter-final, but were then eliminated in their semi-final as well.

The Zone 3 bowlers now turn their attention to State Singles which begins this weekend with sectional play to be contested across eight different venues in each division.

Wee Waa Bowling Club will host eight elimination matches of either State Triples, Senior Triples and Reserve Triples on Saturday.

All semi-finals will be played on Saturday morning at 9am, followed by the finals at 1pm.

Four teams have entered the Wee Waa section of the State Triples. Yates and Pryor will team up with Lloyd Crutcher to take on Wee Waa’s Kevin Baker, Steve Berger and Justin Knight. In the other semi-final, Narrabri’s Preston Clark, David Dewar and Kevin Baguley will challenge Lightning Ridge’s Jamie Cubby, Anthony Lamb and Leo Hooper.
