RSL and the Razorbacks score comfortable round three wins

RSL and the Western Razorbacks were both victorious on Saturday in round three of the 2020-21 Narrabri District Cricket Association first grade one day season.

RSL was impressive as it scored its first win of the season in its second start following a round one loss and a round two washout draw. It took on Civeo at Collins Park in round three and reached 8-192 after 45 overs, before taking all 10 wickets in 37 overs while restricting the opposition to 144 to register a 48-run win.

The in-form Razorbacks also batted first in their round three victory which was their second in as many starts following a round one win and a round two washout draw. The Razorbacks totalled 7-165 in 45 overs in its grand final rematch win against Tatts Cricket Club at Hogan Oval. The Wee Waa-based side then knocked over the defending champions for 130 in the 36th over to win by 35 runs.

At Collins Park, RSL skipper Jarrett Tough won the toss and elected to bat first and was eager for his side to get off to a positive start in his first match in charge. However, it lost an early wicket when opening batsman Cooper Brayshaw (0) was bowled by Mitch Clifton to make the score 1-1.

Cody Kember was joined by Zaac Brayshaw and the pair put on a 64-run second-wicket partnership before Kember (42) was caught during the Ayaz Ahmed-bowled 15th over.

Brayshaw lost three more partners in Tough (0), Shane Murphy (28) and Hamish Duncan (1) which made the score 5-139 after 34 overs.

Brayshaw (50) was then finally dismissed in the 36th over, two deliveries after bringing up his half century.

RSL’s Mick Dowdell smashed a late unbeaten 37 and Tim Shields (10) chipped in with 10 singles as the duo guided their side to its 192-run total.

Civeo’s Ayaz Ahmed (2-9 from three overs), Lachlan Cameron (2-26 from seven overs) and Lees (2-27 from nines overs) were their team’s other wicket takers alongside Clifton (1-48 from nine overs).

RSL’s defence started in style as it picked up the key wicket of Cameron (15) in the fourth over when the Civeo co-captain was caught by Shields from the bowling of Tough.

Cameron’s opening partner Matt Conroy (17), co-captain Luke Meppem (11), and teammates David McInnes (30), Sudintha Perera (16) and Brady Jenkins (10) also chipped in with double digit scores but it was not enough as the chasing side fell 49 runs short of victory.

RSL’s Jake Brayshaw (2-17 from seven overs and two catches), Tough (2-18 from five overs), Matt Tubner (2-22 from five overs), Tim Shields (2-36 from seven overs and three catches), Nathan Trindall (1-12 from two overs) and Kember (1-17 from six overs and two catches) delivered with the ball and in the field, while wicketkeeper Craig Summers also claimed a catch.

In the match played at Hogan Oval, Western Razorbacks captain Justin Knight won the toss and elected to bat.

Tatts skipper Ryan O’Neill celebrated an early wicket when he trapped Toby Reynolds (6) in front to make the score 1-14. That quickly became 2-16 when Reynolds’ opening partner Ty Baker (6) was caught behind by Alistair Hillard from the bowling of Jonty Schwager.

O’Neill then took a second wicket, bowling Hadley Sevil (3) to make the score 3-34.

Three Western Razorbacks batsmen then stood up for their side to help it reach a defendable total. Adam Gordon contributed 29 runs from number three before he was caught by Jakeb Nipperess in the Sid Harvey-bowled 20th over. Number five batsman Josh Trindall top scored with 50 and skipper Knight added 33 runs from number seven before those two Razorbacks were removed in the 41st and 42nd overs respectively.

The dismissal of Knight made the score 7-152 after 41 overs, then the Razorbacks added 13 more runs to the total to finish on 7-165.

Tatts’ opening bowlers Schwager (2-23 from nine overs) and O’Neill (2-25 from nine overs) were their team’s only multiple wicket takers.

Tatts’ chase suffered an early blow as it lost two wickets in the Harry Pattison-bowled sixth over. The Razorbacks’ opening bowler dismissed Tatts’ opening duo Jesse Nancarrow (7) and Jakeb Nipperess (5) to make the score 2-16.

Brendon Ward entered at number three and chipped in with 22 before he was caught by Baker from the bowling of Knight in the 14th over as the score became 3-47 just before drinks.

That left Harvey at the crease with Hillard and the pair combined for a 54-run partnership which guided Tatts past 100 runs.
Razorbacks spinner Clay Hoffman broke that partnership in the 25th over when he dismissed Harvey (20) who was stumped by Sevil which made the score 4-101.

That became 5-112 four overs later when Hoffman bowled Hillard who departed for a team-best 42.

Razorbacks’ Ty Baker then ripped through the Tatts bottom order as the Wee Waa-based side took 5-18 to win the game by 35 runs. Baker took four of those wickets to finish with 4-22 from seven overs, while Zack Trindall (1-22 from eight overs) took the other.

Pattison finished with 2-12 from five overs, Clay Hoffman claimed 2-26 from five overs and Knight finished with 1-19 from five overs.

This Saturday in round four, the two round three winners will meet at Collins Park, while the two round three losers will play at Hogan Oval.
