New and existing businesses in the Narrabri CBD will reap the rewards of a $1.47 million investment by the Coalition government to revamp local roads, federal Member for Parkes and Minister for Local Government Mark Coulton said last week.

Mr Coulton was joined by Narrabri Shire Council mayor, Ron Campbell, to discuss the project, which is being funded under the first round of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.

“It’s fantastic to see plans for CBD road upgrades are charging ahead using funds under the LRCI program, with stage one almost complete and further works commencing in the New Year,” Mr Coulton said.

“This is exactly the type of work the federal government is pleased to support – to create local job opportunities, while delivering lasting benefits.

“Improved roads in the three main CBD blocks will mean smoother journeys for road users and enhanced productivity for businesses in town, as a result of better access.

“This is a great win for Narrabri and supports the fact that this region is moving ahead in leaps and bounds.

“In the 2020–21 budget, the Australian government announced a $1 billion extension of the LRCI program, following strong community and local government support. This extension brings the total LRCI funding allocation for Narrabri Shire Council to $2.8 million, which is excellent news for the local community.”

Cr Campbell said the council welcomed the federal government funds that made the project possible.

“With stage one of works nearing completion, it is clear the final result in our CBD is going to be magnificent,” Cr Campbell said.

“The community is excited to see the completion of the entire CBD project, which will bring together five years of planning and works. These works include the replacement of water mains, installation of new street lighting and centre median, tree planting, roundabout replacements and now the road surface replacement, which will incorporate the CBD parking plan council has previously adopted.

“The road pavement replacement project is part of the overall Narrabri CBD Masterplan, which outlines the future planning and development of the Narrabri CBD area over the next 15 years.

“With anticipated business and community growth, the quality of the CBD areas within our shire are key to supporting new and existing businesses.”

The Maitland Street roadworks revamp complements the shire CBD upgrades project, funded with $321,894 under the Drought Communities Program.
