Narrabri VRA members gathered last week to honour one of their colleagues for dedicated service. VRA captain John Hardgrave presented the National Medal to Lyle Chessells in recognition of his service to the squad and the community over 20 years.

“The National Medal is not awarded simply for long service,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“It is not given to everyone, but awarded as a recognition to members of Australia’s operational groups for their role in emergency situations, people who have put their lives on the line in the service of the community.”

Eligible groups have in common that ‘their members serve or protect the community at the risk of death, injury or trauma.’
