Wee Waa’s Julie Dowleans has received one of the highest honours in our country, an Order of Australia medal for services to the community.

Mrs Dowleans is active across a range of community organisations including Wee Waa’s Echo Museum and community radio station 2MAX FM.

Mrs Dowleans was named as an OAM recipient in June as part of the Queen’s Birthday honours list and was officially presented with the medal at a ceremony at Sydney’s Government House on December 3.

“It was an amazing honour to have received my OAM,” Mrs Dowleans said.

“We arrived at Government House and met up with 13 other recipients from around NSW. The excitement was unbelievable.”

The ceremony was live streamed for family and friends to watch while Julie was allowed two guests due to restrictions. Sister Justine Orman and aunty Sue Bond accompanied her.

Mrs Dowleans was presented her award by Governor of New South Wales Margaret Beazley AC QC.

“The Governor spoke to everyone. She asked me questions about Wee Waa and commented that she was delighted for me and also thanked me for doing what I do for my community,” Mrs Dowleans said.

“We were able to talk with the other recipients and hear their amazing stories too.

“I would like to thank the community of Wee Waa and district of which I am immensely proud and honoured to accept this award for doing what I love and will do my best to continue to serve my community.”
