Many in the community have joined the family of the late Hugh Palmer in mourning his sudden passing on Friday morning.

Mr Palmer, 77, passed away in Dubbo hospital.

Mr Palmer was held in great affection and respect by his many friends and colleagues.

He was a well-known resident, closely engaged with many in the community personally and through his role as a solicitor for some four decades.

Mr Palmer is survived by his wife Beth and two daughters, Stephanie and Anna and their children.

A long time friend of Mr Palmer’s, Terry Miller, said Mr Palmer had suffered ill health for some months, but his death was unexpected.

“He always kept very fit and active,” he said.

The late Mr Palmer played a key role in much of Narrabri’s development as a solicitor and a resident who was a strong advocate for the district.

“During his professional career in Narrabri, Mr Palmer was a mentor to young solicitors who worked at his office.

“He was a friend and advisor to many.

“In addition to his legal work, he was always helping people with personal issues and problems,” Mr Miller said.

Mr Palmer was engaged in the community at many levels, as an Apexian and later as a Rotarian.

“He loved people and talking to people,” said Mr Miller.

Another long-term friend, near neighbour Nola McNamara, said the late Mr Palmer was held in high regard.

“He was just, simply, a lovely man,” she said.

Funeral arrangements are to be announced and will be in Thursday’s Courier.
