Narrabri Shire will enter a second week of lockdown restrictions following the NSW government’s announcement that its state-wide stay-at-home order would be extended.

The order will now be in place until at least 12.01am on August 28.

The lockdown extension for regional NSW comes as the state experienced another record-breaking period of COVID cases.

NSW Health reported 681 new locally acquired cases of the virus in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday night.

It followed another record-breaking day when 633 cases were announced in the daily pandemic update on Wednesday.

Western NSW saw another 25 cases confirmed in the health district in Thursday’s update.

The Hunter New England Local Health District reported five cases, all in the Newcastle local government area.

At the media update, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned that cases numbers aren’t going where the government wants them to go.

“September and October will be difficult for NSW,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Ms Berejiklian emphasised that increased rates of vaccination would be the way out of restrictions.

“The next few weeks will be hard, but no doubt that once we get those high vaccination rates life will feel much better,” she said.

“As the Doherty report says, when you get to 80 per cent double dose and you have to open up, everyone will have to learn to live with Delta.”
