It’s no secret homeschooling can be monotonous, so Wee Waa’s Namoi Valley Christian School principal Peter Henderson thought he’d try and brighten families’ learning from home schedules with a cooking competition during COVID lockdown.

“As well as completing the work provided by classroom teachers, I thought I’d put out a ‘challenge’ for families to complete,” said Mr Henderson.

Mr Henderson made the baking challenge call-out on the school’s Facebook page and it’s been a huge success, with many students submitting photos of their scrumptious kitchen creations from chocolate cakes to rocky road and more.

“As well as doing all we can to continue students’ learning from home, we wanted families to be doing things together that weren’t school work related.

“I believe that spending time in the kitchen together is a great way for families to spend purposeful time together,” said Mr Henderson.

“Everyone is working towards a common goal, and they all get to enjoy the finished product.

“It’s also wonderful to be able to share what everyone has made, and this will hopefully provide encouragement for other families.

“Our current plan is to provide two challenges per week whilst the lockdown lasts.”

Under the current stay-at-home orders, children are being asked to learn from home except if their parent or carer is an essenital worker or they can’t be educated at home.
