Narrabri Shire Council has installed four additional automated external defibrillators (AEDs) across the area.

The new machines need to be used in conjunction with CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to help revive a person experiencing a cardiac event.

Mayor Ron Campbell said the user-friendly portable devices work by sending controlled electronic pulses through the body.

“These life-saving devices can be used by anyone during an emergency,” he explained.

“They are very straight-forward to operate and can be a vital tool during an emergency situation.”

Cr Campbell said the new devices were purchased on the recommendation of council’s Health and Safety Committee.

He also noted that they are a welcome addition to the existing AEDs already installed at the Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri community swimming pools.

“The new AEDs have been installed at the Narrabri depot, Narrabri Waste Facility, The Crossing Theatre and Narrabri Region Visitor Information Centre,” he said.

“Here, they can benefit employees and the community.”

Nominated staff members from each of the new defibrillator sites attended an awareness course to familiarise themselves with the machines.

In addition to this training, each device comes with an informative set of visual and verbal instructions.

“Having a workplace and a community prepared with these skills and tools is just so important,” Cr
Campbell said.

“I believe it is vital that we have these devices installed across high traffic areas, both in terms of population and demographics.”

The AEDs have been placed in a prominent position in each of the locations, for ease of access in case of an emergency.
