Almost 1000 Pfizer vaccines were administered across the Narrabri Shire with clinics taking place in Wee Waa and Narrabri.

The vaccinations were delivered and administered by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) with the assistance of local nursing staff from Hunter New England Health.

Mayor Ron Campbell was pleased with how smoothly each of the vaccination events ran.

“The Narrabri walk-in clinics were arranged by the RFDS and council along with emergency services and other key stakeholders within four days; with the Wee Waa clinic being arranged by the RFDS in liaison with Wee Waa Local Aboriginal Land Council within the same timeframe.

“The purpose of these clinics was to increase the overall vaccination rate of the Narrabri Shire which as of 27 August 50.4 per cent of Narrabri Shire residents 15 years and above had received their first dose and only 22.1 per cent having received both doses.

“I’d like to sincerely thank the Royal Flying Doctor Service for providing our community with this mass vaccination opportunity and thank the community for their ongoing patience with some waiting in queues for over four hours.”

The event coordination at The Crossing Theatre hosted clinics, was led by council’s director of corporate and community services, Lindsay Mason.

Mr Mason was on the ground ensuring the event ran smoothly.

Mr Mason said both days at The Crossing Theatre ran extremely well.

“There was enough medical staff, council staff volunteers, community organisation volunteers, and emergency services; all of which played vital roles in delivering this mass walk-in clinic to our community,” he said.

“The event was coordinated in four days between council, the RFDS, Narrabri and Wee Waa nursing

staff from Hunter New England Health, local emergency services, Rotary and with the assistance from federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, and Upper House MP Sam Farraway.

“There were some long days and nights involved to get the logistical arrangements in place in such a short timeframe and to ensure everything went according to plan on all days.

“The Crossing Theatre was the most logical venue to hold these walk-in clinics due to the location, venue size, facilities available on site, parking, and all weather access.”

“There was a significant amount of interest from Narrabri Shire residents wanting to roll up their sleeve as was an incredible amount of interest from surrounding shires.”

A second day of vaccinations in Narrabri got underway early on Monday morning in response to the community’s eagerness to receive the immunisation.

While the exact doses of vaccine administered at Monday’s clinic was unavailable before Tuesday’s Courier went to print on Monday afternoon, officials at the clinic anticipated a few hundred immunisations could be injected following Sunday’s successful roll-out.

This would take Narrabri’s total across the two days to almost 1000 in addition to Wee Waa’s Saturday clinic.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service will be back in the Narrabri Shire to administer the second dose in the coming weeks.
