A positive COVID case has been detected in Narrabri, local police have advised.

Inspector Robert Dunn, speaking as the Local Emergency Operations Controller, told 2Max FM that officials were well underway with contract tracing and that any exposure sites will come as soon as they’re available.

He also urged calm in the community in wake of the announcement.

“We don’t want to cause mass hysteria,” he said when speaking with 2Max FM’s Cassie Boyd on Thursday morning.

“Testing is now going to be the focus.

“We need to test anyone with the mildest of symptoms.”

Insp Dunn emphasised that the onus is now on everyone to do the right thing.

He said this included mask wearing, checking in and out at locations as well as following the public health orders relating to essential activities.

Insp Dunn also advised people to only trust information from NSW Health.

The person who tested positive to the virus is no longer in the Narrabri Shire and is being treated by NSW Health.

“This person is a Queensland resident who recently visited Sydney before travelling to Narrabri, where they work. They are now being cared for in Tamworth Hospital,” a NSW Health statement said.

“The case was infectious while in the community, so we are asking anyone in that community to come forward for testing even if they have very mild symptoms.

“A drive-through COVID-19 testing facility has been set up at Narrabri Hospital commencing today. It will operate from 9am to 3.30pm and will continue into the weekend.”
