A classroom in the industrial arts building at Narrabri High School has been damaged following a fire on Friday afternoon.

Crews from Narrabri’s Fire and Rescue station responded to reports of a blaze involving an air conditioning system attached the building.

Firefighters were at the scene in under eight minutes and found an externally mounted air conditioning unit fully engulfed by the fire.

The blaze had quickly spread throughout the ducting into the inside of the classroom.

Major smoke and heat damage resulted from the fire’s spread.

Local Fire and Rescue crews were joined by South Tamworth and Gunnedah brigades in addition to local Rural Fire Service volunteers in Friday’s extraorindary firefighting effort.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire to prevent further damage to the room and its contents.

A Year 12 student’s major work was severely damaged as a result of the fire, however, damage to other works was prevented thanks to the rapid containment of the incident.

Police are treating the high school fire as suspicious.
