Narrabri Shire’s already high uptake of COVID vaccinations is set to increase further following a successful second weekend of mass immunisations across Narrabri and Wee Waa.

Hundreds of people turned out to receive inoculations at a clinic held at The Crossing Theatre on Sunday and Monday.

Sunday saw 620 doses injected while Monday’s tally was 320.

Wee Waa’s Saturday clinic saw more than 200 doses administered at the Wee Waa Local Aboriginal Land Council.

More than 80 per cent of shire residents aged 16 years or older had already received their first dose according to updated vaccination data released by the Commonwealth government last week.

The second dose rate of 38 per cent is particularly expected to increase considerably following a strong turn-out of people seeking their follow-up immunisations at these clinics.

Narrabri Shire Council mayor Ron Campbell thanked the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the agencies and organisations involved in three days of vaccinations across Narrabri and Wee Waa.

“We were thankful to see the Royal Flying Doctor Service return to the Narrabri Shire over the weekend to administer largely second dose COVID vaccinations to the Narrabri Shire community,” Cr Campbell said.

Cr Campbell said council again provided The Crossing Theatre as the Narrabri venue and was pleased with how the event ran on both days.

“Several council staff again volunteered their time to assist in the logistics as well as local volunteer emergency services and the Rotary Club,” he said.

“We were also pleased to see local nursing staff from Hunter New England Health return to assist over the three days making the mass vaccination hubs truly community focused events.”

“While as of September 19, our local government area first dose rate had ticked over 80 per cent we were still only sitting at 38 per cent second dose.

“We are certainly looking forward to seeing how the vaccinations administered over the weekend increase our double dose percentages in the Australian government’s official vaccination statistics over the coming weeks.”

The latest round of vaccination data, detailing immunisation rates by local government area, is expected to be published by the Commonwealth government on Monday afternoon or Tuesday.

These details will be published in Thursday’s Courier.
