Dawn Armstrong and Jan Etheridge are the Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club’s President Pairs champions for 2021.

Armstrong and Etheridge defeated Rhonda Fitzgerald and Lyn Tuckey 28-9 in the final played at Narrabri Sporties’ John McNamara Owen Campey Green on Saturday morning.

Those two teams qualified for the decider after winning their respective semi-final matches last Thursday.

Armstrong and Etheridge beat Lyn Wedesweiler and Glennis Godden 16-11, while Fitzgerald and Tuckey edged out Di Chessells and Helen Woodward 13-11.

On Saturday morning, Armstrong and Etheridge were required to give a three-point start in the final which they reached by the fourth end after scoring a two on the second and a one on the fourth.

Fitzgerald and Tuckey then led 4-0 after five ends before Armstrong and Etheridge scored a four on the sixth to lock the score up at four apiece.

The eventual champs established an unassailable14-4 lead by the end of the eighth after scoring back-to-back fives.

They led 19-6 after 12 ends before Fitzgerald and Tuckey reduced the deficit to 10 by scoring a three on the 13th.

Those were the last points that the trailing team would register as Armstrong and Etheridge went on to claim the next five ends while adding nine shots to win the contest 28-9 after 18 ends of play.

The Narrabri Sporties’ 2021 men’s campaign also continued on Saturday at the club’s John McNamara Owen Campey Green.

A Consistency Singles quarter-final and semi-final were played, seeing Dave Dewar book a spot in the final against Larry Scott who defeated Ron Ryan 153-126 a week earlier.

On Saturday, Kevin Baguley beat Graham Rose 154-124 after 29 ends in the quarter-final.

The pair traded a 7-3 each to start the game, which was tied at 10-all after two ends.

Baguley then won the third 6-4 and remained in front for the remainder of the match. He led by as many as 32 shots before eventually winning the contest by 30.

Baguley then met Dewar in the semi-final Saturday afternoon, which Dewar won 157-133 after 29 ends.

Dewar got off to a flying start as he scored two 10s during the first four ends of play to establish a 29-11 lead.

He never trailed after going ahead at the completion of the second end, and after leading by as many as 38 points when the score was 94-56 after 15 ends, he won the contest by 24 shots when he brought up victory with an 8-2 on the 29th.

A men’s President Pairs match was also played on Saturday, which saw Terry Wilson and Trinity Kelly defeat Bruce Tomlinson and Len Ryan 24-14.

In Mixed Pairs, Marie and Tony Redman received a forfeit from Janet and Stewart Coleman.

Ladies’ social bowls was played last Thursday.

Carol Tomlinson, Trish Allison and Mary Wheeler beat Carol Demamiel, Rhonda Welchman and Heather Caton 16-12, while Janet Coleman, Gloria Campey and Kay Carolan outscored Olwyn Campey, Cecile and Ronnie Dewar 19-8.

Patrons Trophy will commence this Thursday, November 4, for the local lady bowlers at 9.30am. The trophy is played for across the four Thursdays in November.

Any players unable to play on any Thursday have been asked to notify Ronnie Dewar by phone no later than 8.15am to allow the draw to be completed before 9.15am.

Only one game is set down to be played at Narrabri Sporties this Saturday, November 6, as 12 local players are travelling to Coonamble for their A Day.

In President Pairs action from 9.30am, Scott Dewar and Graham Rose will challenge Norm Walford and Anthony Welchman.

Narrabri Sporties advised that any member wishing to play social bowls is only required to be a social club member.

Men’s and ladies’ social bowls are played on Thursday mornings. Names need to be in by 9am on the day.

Barefoot bowls under lights is also played every Thursday night. Players are asked to be at the club by 6pm.
