On Wednesday, September 8, Narrabri High School began their Steps to Wellbeing initiative.
The step-counting competition began when the Narrabri Shire was locked down, and students made to learn from home.
The program saw both students and staff take part, monitoring their daily step count for the past almost two months.
In addition to encouraging healthy habits like exercise and outdoor time with friends, Steps to Wellbeing challenged participants to get as many steps in as possible to contribute to the group’s total tally with the hopes of winning the competition.
Lockdown has since come to an end, but the competitive spirit between year groups and teachers has remained.
On Monday, October 24, the final scores were tallied.
In 54 days, the Narrabri High participants racked up a combined more than 16 million steps.
It was the dedicated staff, going by the team name Trotting Teachers, that took out the top spot.
The 19-person team was led to victory by Kathy Bailey, tallying more than six million steps as a group.
Members from Trotting Teachers also took out the top spots individually, too.
Renee Collins placed first with over 753,000, and Chase Magner came next with more than 710,000.
The third-placed individual was Clayton Pursche, of year seven, with just over 609,000.
The top ten individual placegetters were commemorated with certificates on Friday, October 29, which also marked World Teachers’ Day in Australia.
