In-form greyhound Lagoon Dark Eyes faced challenging conditions on a wet and windy day in Gunnedah last Thursday when he went in search of his fifth consecutive victory at the town’s local greyhound track.
The classy one-year-old, trained by Bellata’s Kevin Campbell, well and truly rose to the occasion when he charged home to a two-and-a-half-length victory in the fifth race of the day as his eyebrow-raising run of form continued.
In a 431-metre grade five event, Lagoon Dark Eyes started from the wide box wearing the number eight.
Six of the other seven runners on his inside began well, but the Bellata bullet charged into third place after just four seconds before establishing a comfortable lead at the 100-metre mark.
Lagoon Dark Eyes handled the final turn elegantly and looked certain to win as he entered the home straight.
John Lawson-trained duo Hey Buddy (box five) and Tarnie (box seven) made some ground during the turn and were able to provide a challenge but were forced to settle for second and third place, respectively, as the Campbell-trained greyhound ripped away and won with ease.
The Bellata bullet claimed the $1500 top prize for that victory which took his lifetime earnings to $6720 at an average of almost $1000 per race following seven explosive starts, all of which have been in Gunnedah.
Lagoon Dark Eyes began his career in September with two second-place finishes before nailing a win in his third maiden attempt.
He raced twice in October and twice this month, during which he has delivered four consecutive grade five wins.
He will line up from box eight again today in his debut 431-metre grade four/five race in Gunnedah as he goes in search of his sixth consecutive win.
Meanwhile, Wee Waa trainers Tim and Colin Anderson both had one dog in action at Gunnedah last week, both of which raced to third-placed finishes.
The Tim Anderson-trained Lagoon Lockdown jumped from box seven in the first race of the day, a 527-metre grade four/five race.
The two-year-old dog ran home to a third-place finish just three days before his third birthday after he finished about four lengths back from the Graham Pickering-trained winner Swift Dylan (box three).
Lagoon Lockdown’s place rate now sits at an impressive 51 per cent, following 21 top-three finishes in his 41 starts.
The Colin Anderson-trained Fire Fly Angel then lined up in the fourth race of the day, a 340-metre grade four/five event.
The two-year-old bitch jumped from box four and ran home third, about a length and a quarter behind the Kevin Sills-trained winner Typhoon Nellie (box six).
Fire Fly Angel now boasts a 52 per cent place rate following her 12th top-three finish in 23 starts.
