A landslide Labor victory in the South Australian election at the weekend has sent a warning signal to political parties that incumbency for sitting governments might not be the advantage it was previously. The Steven Marshall-led Liberals were ousted after sitting for one term. Electorates once considered ‘blue ribbon’ Liberal seats are likely to change hands. The election result in SA follows by-elections in NSW where Labor achieved a swing of more than 12 per cent in Bega and almost five per cent in Monaro. Labor, however, suffered a swing against it in Strathfield as well as at last year’s by-election in Upper Hunter.
