What next? A viral infection called monkeypox has arrived in Australia – the first ever recorded in NSW. Fortunately, it is usually a mild illness, very rare and not easily transmitted to humans. A man in his 40s was diagnosed with monkeypox several days after arriving in Sydney. NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Chant said monkeypox is a viral infection that does not spread easily between people and is usually associated with travel to Central or West Africa, where it is endemic.
