Services available to support people who may be experiencing homelessness were showcased at a Maitland Street pop-up centre last week.

The event was staged by the Narrabri and District Community Aid Service to mark National Homelessness Week.

An estimated 120 people came through the doors of the centre last Friday.

Free pies, soft drinks and resource bags were on offer to attendees.

NDCAS community development officer Kayla Nehrkorn thanked all of the services which travelled from different parts of the New England North West to be there for the homelessness event.

Tamworth Family Support, Summit Community Services, Good Samaritans, Youth Mental Health Project and Salvation Army were the services in attendance.

Local services which popped in to show their support for the event included Gunnedah Family Support, Winanga-Li and Hunter New England Health.

Three Cert III community studies students volunteered for the day, and Dean Shaw (DJ) happily helped on the day by playing tunes at the pop-up centre.

“A community member was overheard sharing her excitement of all the free resources and lunch available,” Ms Nehrkorn said.

NDCAS rented the space, the vacant shop next to Baguley’s Jewellers, for the week and set-up a window display of two types of homelessness — couch surfing and rough sleeping in a tent.

There was an opportunity for attendees to become NDCAS members.

Members of NDCAS receive service updates, AGM reports and personal invitations to any upcoming events.
