How clever are some people! Cambridge University researchers have invented ultra-thin, artificial leaves which float on water and mimic photosynthesis, the process whereby natural plant leaves convert sunlight into food. As the artificial leaves float, they change sunlight, carbon dioxide and water into a clean liquid fuel that can be stored. The potential for use of the leaves is massive – they are transportable, that is they can be rolled up and taken anywhere. Researchers say one application, among many, including floating them at sea for energy, may be to float them on farm irrigation dams and waterways to reduce evaporation and generate fuel.
