The Namoi Dragons boat has been officially christened, ready for its local members to continue on the path of growing the sport of dragon boating in the Narrabri Shire.

Dragon boaters and visitors gathered by the Narrabri West lake for the official blessing and naming ceremony before the members took part in their weekly paddling which occurs on Sundays.

Local celebrant Tricia Hadley officiated as the master-of-ceremonies and offered a blessing for the boat before the club’s president Dr Karen Kirkby christened the vessel with a bottle of champagne.

Mayor Ron Campbell, who was part of the official proceedings, described the ceremony as a wonderful occasion.

“This adds another touch of colour, and dynamic, to our wonderful community,” he said.

Since forming at the start of the year, the local Dragons have been busily growing the club while learning the sport of dragon boating from neighbouring and supporting clubs.

The Dubbo Outback Dragons, which provided the initial donation of a dragon boat to the Narrabri-based club, is the ‘godmother’ of the Namoi Dragons’ boat.

The Namoi Dragons were officially registered with the sport’s peak body in NSW in June this year.
