Councillor Darrell Tiemens was elected to the position of deputy mayor at a vote held at Tuesday afternoon’s ordinary meeting of Narrabri Shire Council.

Cr Tiemens was elected to council at the local government election in late 2021.

Cr John Clements was also a nominee for the position of deputy mayor, and it was a close contest with a show of hands for the vote.

Cr Tiemens received five votes, including his own, with support from mayor Ron Campbell, former deputy mayor Cathy Redding, Cr Lisa Richardson and Cr Brett Dickinson. Cr Clements received four votes, including his own, with support from Cr Robert Browning, Cr Rohan Boehm and Cr Greg Lamont.

Following the council meeting, Cr Campbell thanked former deputy mayor Cr Redding for her great service.

“She thought that it was a great idea to step down and nominate a new councillor for that position, and that was Cr Tiemens,” he said.

“I congratulate her on that unselfish act and thank her.”

Cr Campbell congratulated Cr Tiemens for being elected as the deputy mayor.

“I look forward to working with him as deputy mayor,” Cr Campbell said.

The new deputy mayor thanked Cr Redding for her nomination and said the act was a good measure of her character.

“I look forward to working with council and pursuing the agenda for everyone in Narrabri Shire,” Cr Tiemens said.

“I think Narrabri Shire is a great shire to live in.

“We have a great future ahead of us. We’re committed to making sure everyone wins out of future developments.”
