The Narrabri Shire Library kicked off its recent school holiday activities with the egg carton hothouse on Wednesday, September 28.

With seeds supplied by Narrabri Shire Library, five students set about creating a hothouse environment with guidance from Narrabri Shire Library programs officer Ann Bowen.

Soil is first put into the egg carton pods, then the students chose from a selection of seeds which included flowers, herbs and vegetables, and wrote their choices on paddle pop sticks to label each section.

The egg carton, with its lid removed and a drink of water added, is inserted into a plastic bread bag and the end tied to encourage the development of condensation.

After taking the projects home and placing in natural light, the bags can be removed after the seeds have started sprouting, usually in a few days.

Once the seedlings have become stronger, ideally sitting in a window setting, they can be planted out in the garden.

Narrabri Shire Library programs officer and coordinator of the event Ann Bowen said the workshop activities were a valuable service to students in our communities.

“The Narrabri Shire Libraries in Wee Waa, Narrabri and Boggabri provide these wonderful learning programs each school holidays,” Mrs Bowen said.

“We are pleased to be able to offer such a valuable learning tool with the focus very importantly on having fun turn our shire libraries into inspirational hands-on seminars for students during the school holiday break.”
