The federal and state governments have ramped up financial assistance available to for severely impacted by major flooding events in 2022.
Narrabri Shire is among 17 local government areas which were the worst impacted in NSW from the disastrous flood events which occurred late last year.
A new, jointly funded $182 million package will target these local government areas.
Back Home grants of up to $20,000 to support owner-occupiers, landlords and renters to repair their homes and replace essential household items is one of the key items of the new package.
Up to 16 weeks of rental support payments for flood-affected households is also on offer for eligible residents.
The Commonwealth and state governments will also jointly fund $8.9 million to undertake targeted residential property assessments.
Neighbouring Gunnedah and Moree Plains shires are also being targeted as part of the assistance package
The assistance has been welcomed by federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton.
“I know this support will come as a great relief for all those families who face a long road ahead to rebuild and clean up their flood-damaged properties,” Mr Coulton said.
NSW Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery, Steph Cooke said the state had learnt from previous floods that Back Home grants help to accelerate the rebuilding process for households.
Acting federal Minister for Emergency Management, Catherine King said the Commonwealth government will stand alongside communities for the long haul.
“This package will deliver more security for families and a roof over peoples’ heads through the recovery process,” she said.
“Together with the NSW government, we will continue to look for ways to assist in the clean-up and recovery efforts.”
The latest flood assistance is in addition to previous measures which were introduced as a result of the major flood events.
Previously announced assistance covered homes, businesses and primary producers.
Support for road repairs has also been increased in the months following the flooding.
