A photograph of the night sky above Narrabri’s Paul Wild Observatory was a finalist in the 2022 David Magro Milky Way Landscape Awards.
The image was captured by photographer Craig Godfrey at the Australia Telescope Compact Array – a popular location to photograph the Milky Way.
Night photography is one of the offerings of the CSIRO facility which holds evenings throughout the year for photographers to attempt to capture the night sky from the Yarrie Lake Road facility.
The awards promote the art of landscape photography of the Milky Way and showcases photographers of all skill levels.
Capturing the night sky is a magical experience, and is something that requires a degree of technique.
Long exposure photography is usually used to capture the landscapes aligned with the stars above.
Cameras are capable of capturing the faint light above which often isn’t visible to the human eye.
The overall winner, announced at the end of last year, was awarded for a photograph of mist rolling across a body of water while the Milky Way can be seen above.
