On this day … the Australian Premiers’ conference was held in Melbourne. It was decided to locate Australia’s new capital city Canberra between Sydney and Melbourne. Construction on the new capital city would not take place until 1913, following initial debates on where the city should be located as well as the international design competition, which ultimately saw Walter Burley Griffin designing the city.
