Facilitators of a test bore at Yarrie Lake are optimistic it will produce a positive outcome.

Officials met with NSW Deputy Premier Paul Toole recently to explain the progress which has been made at the site.

Initial results have seen the test bore produce an estimated 33 litres a second. Officials are also optimistic the water quality is as required.

The test bore project has been enabled by $450,000 through the Murray–Darling Basin Economic Development Program and has been supported by Narrabri and Wee Waa chambers.

“The water quality is promising,” Yarrie Lake Flora and Fauna Trust chair Lester Kelly said.

Mr Kelly paid tribute to late Wee Waa chamber president Ann-Maree Galagher and her enduring support of the test bore.

“She was a great supporter of this,” Mr Kelly said.

Mr Kelly also thanked Member for Barwon Roy Butler for his support.

“He has never let us down,” Mr Kelly said.

Mr Kelly was also joined by Narrabri and District Chamber of Commerce president Russell Stewart for the bore site tour.

Mr Stewart said the chamber was delighted to be part of the project.

Proponents of the test bore want to see a permanent water supply for the lake which is touted as one of the shire’s best tourism attractions.

A permanent water supply would ensure the lake is able to cater for recreation activities all year.

The trust has also received a grant of $99,967 for solar installations at the site.

Coupled with electricity improvements at the campgrounds, it is hoped that more powered sites and new amenities can be introduced for people staying at Yarrie Lake.

Just before the test bore site tour, Mr Toole was joined by officials to announce Narrabri Shire Council would receive road sealing funds for Yarrie Lake Circuit.

Mr Kelly described the bitumising of the circuit as a long time coming.

“We want to thank the councillors for their support,” he said.

“It will help Yarrie Lake to ensure its rightful place as a top tourism attraction in the shire.”

Following his inspection of the test bore site, Mr Toole said it complemented the road sealing plans and would ensure access to water every day.

“It ensures this precinct is alive all year yound,” Mr Toole said.
