Mayor Ron Campbell offered a personal reflection on the Namoi River, as he welcomed delegates to Narrabri and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s River Reflections conference, held at The Crossing Theatre last week.
“I reflect on the river every day. I look at it every day” he said.
“I’m down on the river bank most days of the week at some stage, by myself, with my family, reflecting on its flow, how high or low it is, its colour, or just enjoying the birds and tranquility.
“I reflect on the erosion along its banks due to flooding, reflect on flooding and the consequences of that, good and bad, the damage it can cause, but also the rejuvenation that flooding brings to the land.
“I reflect that it’s only because of the river flooding that we have some of the best farming country in the world.
“I also reflect on the generations of farming families that have forged a living along the river, and the communities that have thrived on its banks and beyond, producing food and fibre, not only for Australia but the world, they have significantly contributed over generations, to the rich and privileged lifestyle our country enjoys today.
“And we should all reflect on the significance and importance of that.”
