The Rotary wheel has taken pride of place at an upgrade to the Selina Street shelters.
The upgrade of the precinct is a Rotary Club of Narrabri project and has involved the construction of two new shelters.
Work to install an electric barbecue at the site also started last week.
The new shelters replace the iconic ‘igloos’, also developed by Rotary as a way of enhancing the shelter area by the Narrabri Creek bridge.
Rotary’s Selina Street picnic area refurbishment was successful in securing a grant from the previous NSW government.
Grants, fundraising and donations toward the project total almost $60,000.
The development, initiated during former president Julie Herbert’s year at Rotary’s helm, is one of the club’s biggest undertakings in recent years.
The project was highlighted by outgoing club president Dylan Smith during Rotary’s changeover dinner at the Tourist Hotel on Saturday night.
“With a large Rotary wheel to be featured on one of the shelter’s panels, it will serve as a reminder to the community of Rotary’s ongoing contributions to Narrabri,” Mr Smith told the dinner gathering.
“A very special thank you to Rotarian Wayne Wheeler for his tireless efforts on this project.”
Mr Smith also particularly thanked the club’s community service director, Grahame Herbert, who has also given his time generously towards the project.
“The new amenities further enhance the community’s recreational options and encourage social interaction,” Mr Herbert said.
Mr Herbert’s ongoing contributions to Rotary were celebrated when Mr Smith announced he was the recipient of the Rotarian of the Year Award for 2023.
Similarly, Mrs Herbert was also acknowledged for her achievements with the club and was awarded the Dark Horse award.
