Electrical apprentice Matthew Nott will vie for NSW’s Apprentice of the Year at a training awards ceremony in Sydney Town Hall on Friday evening.

It follows Mr Nott’s success in being named Apprentice of the Year at the New England Training Awards.

Mr Nott pursued his apprenticeship in the electrotechnology industry with HVTC North West and host employer Whitehaven Coal, making the most of the opportunity which saw him recognised as a role model for the apprenticeship pathway.

Before studying with TAFE NSW and completing his apprenticeship, Mr Nott completed an engineering degree at university – but always knew he wanted to have vocational training under his belt.

“Studying at TAFE NSW provided me with the understanding of practical applications that I was really seeking,” he said.

“The theory and class work was matched with practical work, and I feel like I have been given the tools to succeed in and understand working environments. I look forward to seeing where this industry takes me.”

Mr Nott is now furthering his impact on the sector, studying an Associate Degree of Engineering, with a major in electrical and electronics.

He is helping to fulfill the growing need for electrical professionals across Australia, with employment rates for qualified electricians expected to grow by 10.2 per cent, and electrical engineers by 9.5 per cent over the next five years.

The annual New England Training Awards serve as a prominent regional event, spotlighting excellence.

This occasion is dedicated to acknowledging the accomplishments of learners, employers, registered training organizations, and various other stakeholders.

Nominees for the regional training awards are put forth by their employers, instructors, or training representatives.

They undergo an application and interview process prior to being chosen as regional finalists.

This year’s awards saw 56 nominations spanning seven distinct categories, with 36 of these nominations progressing to become regional finalists.

The culmination of the regional training awards took place in June.

Of the six regional finalists from the New England awards, four have clinched the distinction of being named state finalists.

The decisive moment for unveiling the victors is scheduled for Friday night at the grand Sydney Town Hall.

New England Training Services NSW extends its congratulations and acknowledgment of the remarkable endeavours put forth by state finalists this year.

The emergence of four state finalists this year marks a historic achievement for the New England/North West region.
