A community recovery officer has been appointed for the Narrabri Shire.

The new appointee will be one of 10 officers who will work to bolster ongoing recovery efforts in regional NSW, particularly the Central West, North West and New England, and Riverina areas.

Devastating floods in 2022 led to more than 1700 people seeking emergency accommodation across NSW. More than 5200 properties were damaged, and the flooding caused significant impacts on key infrastructure such as electricity, sewage, and roads.

Estimates released in 2023 showed Narrabri Shire assets could experience more than $21 million in damage as a result of the flooding events experienced between September and November 2022.

Under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the Commonwealth and state governments will jointly provide $2.2 million in funding.

This allocation will support community recover officers as they collaborate closely with their communities during the next 12 months to facilitate community recovery activities.

These officers will be integrated into local councils, collaborating closely with community groups and other disaster response and recovery stakeholders.
