I hope that you’re all coping with this hot weather.

Older people living in our communities may be at high risk of heat exhaustion/stress, especially those who live alone without frequent contact from others.

Can I just encourage everyone to check in on their elderly friends, relatives, and neighbours at times like this?

Last Tuesday, I chaired our first council meeting for the calendar year. It was fairly straightforward.

A number of matters were decided and announced. Council meetings are live-streamed, and past meetings are open to be viewed on the council’s YouTube channel.

Simply search for “Narrabri Shire YouTube” using Google.

I have been asked by a few residents why the meetings have to be so formal. Great question!

It largely comes down to the fact that the way that councils operate is determined by the NSW Local Government Act.

There are mandatory meeting procedures which Narrabri Shire had to adopt which determine things such as when a councillor can speak, how they have to behave, and how meetings have to proceed in order to run a meeting which is fair and orderly so that all councillors are heard within a meeting.

Keeping meetings focused can be challenging.

Last Wednesday, the general manager and I met up with the Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, during the Narrabri Development Roundtable.

I remain hopeful that our shire can receive necessary funding for critical services and infrastructure.

Families in our shire deserve access to the same levels of service and infrastructure as their city counterparts.

Our schools, hospitals, roads, and child care centres need to be first-class.

Don’t forget that our CREATE festival kicks off on March 8.

For 16 days, Narrabri Shire will transform into a bustling hub of creativity.

This year’s festival promises lots of activities, from craft shops and galleries to exhibitions and creative workshops, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

We’re particularly thrilled about the return of NarraBRIGHT on March 15.

For further details, jump on the shire’s website.

Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone involved in sporting clubs, voluntary groups, or not-for-profits to consider applying for some of the grants that are on offer by companies and government.

I am the council representative on a couple of committees that consider grant applications, and I am always surprised at how few applications come from our shire area.

We have grants officers available at council who can advise you about how to apply. They are very helpful!

Meanwhile, have a great week, and I’ll see you all at CREATE and some of the wonderful events happening across the shire during March.

Finally, don’t forget to check on older residents during this heat! Take care.
