President of the Jane Austen Society of Australia Susannah Fullerton OAM will be visiting Narrabri to talk at ArtsNational’s next featured lecture in its 2024 arts talk series.

‘Jane Austen: her Life and Works’ will be presented in Cinema 1, The Crossing Theatre on Monday, April 8.

The six most polished, controlled, and elegant social comedies to be found in English Literature were written by a woman whose personal life was unexciting and confined.

Jane Austen’s cool judgment, ironic detachment and genius gave her novels depth and charm and made them some of the most popular novels ever written.

When Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813, it was done anonymously.

Austen did not put her name to her novels and would only say they were ‘By a Lady.’

The title page of Pride and Prejudice said, ‘by the author of Sense and Sensibility.’

It wasn’t until after her death that her brother revealed her name to the public, and posthumous publications have borne Austen’s name ever since.

Susannah Fullerton will be sharing her passion for Austen’s novels and her interest in her life and times.

Illustrations transferred to the cinematic screen will bring the Regency world to life and readings will remind audiences just how entertaining Austen’s writing can be.

Ms Fullerton has been passionate about literature for as long as she can remember.

She has a BA from the University of Auckland NZ and a post-graduate degree in Victorian literature from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Currently teaching literature courses in Sydney and lecturing regularly at the State Library of NSW and

the Art Gallery of NSW, Ms Fullerton has been president of the Jane Austen Society of Australia for the past 18 years.

In 2017 she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for Services to Literature and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW. This is primarily a scientific body, but when it extended into arts and culture, Ms Fullerton was the first recipient of the award in this category.

ArtsNational lectures last for approximately one hour, followed by complimentary drinks and canapés in The Crossing Theatre café and an opportunity to chat with our guest speakers.

Our international and Australian arts speakers are experts in their fields.
