Narrabri Rugby Club celebrated their first home gameday of the 2024 Central North Rugby Union campaign at Dangar Park with three dominant victories against the Scone Brumbies on Saturday.

Narrabri’s women’s team kicked off round four with a 63-14 win before their second grade side prevailed 69-0. The first grade men then had a chance to make it a clean sweep in front of a loud home crowd and they got the job done with a 41-3 victory.

The home gameday against Scone is usually one that attracts the fewest number of fans for the Blue Boars, but president Mick Coffey said there was a good turnout on the day as the local community showed up in numbers to support their rugby teams.

Coffey told The Courier that he was thrilled rugby union had returned to Dangar Park.

“It was a good day. Perfect weather for footy but maybe a little too perfect because there were a few sunburnt faces up there in the clubhouse after the game,” Coffey said.

“The field is in pretty good shape, too, considering the amount of bodies that have been training on it, senior and junior.

“It was a good crowd. Sometimes we struggle to get a good crowd against Scone, but being our first home game of this year’s comp and being a long time since the Albies games, people were quite keen and they showed up in good numbers, and they got three entertaining games of footy to watch.”

Coffey said that one of the club’s goals this year is to win CNRU’s club championship for the first time since 2015, and Saturday’s results proved that they have what it takes.

“It was really big to get three wins,” the Blue Boars’ president said.

“While everyone is focused on their own team results, three from three is a big achievement for the club. You start stacking a few of those together in a year, and you’re looking at the club championship.

“It’d be an enormous achievement to win that because they’re harder to win than premierships as you have to have three really strong grades for the whole year.

“It’s only early days in the season but it would be great to take that back off Pirates who have held it for almost a decade (since 2016).”

The Blue Boars’ teams will all pick up points this weekend as they sit out with round five byes in all grades.

The next home games at Dangar Park will be played in round six on Saturday, May 11, when the Blue Boars host Barraba in women’s tens and second grade matches, and the next time Narrabri play in all three grades on the same day on home soil will be two weeks later in round eight when they meet Moree in women’s tens and Quirindi in the men’s grades.
